The Soroban Abacus Method
Mental Calculation
The Soroban is a Japanese Abacus, which has been in use for over 500 years Soroban is taught in Japan to young children to teach them Mathematics, mental discipline, to develop their "right brain" capabilities such as logic and reason, and other beneficial uses. Soroban attracts public attention, because it helps prevent the cerebrum from senility. Calculation with imaging the beads of the Soroban in the brain is called a mental calculation by the Soroban method. Each column of the Soroban consists of five beads, and can display any number from zero to nine, ten numbers.
Soroban is a very unique device that enables one to grasp the numbers intuitively. Soroban also makes it easier to image the beads to display the numbers instead of the Arabic numerals. Finding an approximate number and making rough estimations can also be done with using mental calculation. The human brain consists of the right brain (creation, Imagination, inspiration) and left brain (logic and analysis). According to Dr.Kimiko Kawano (Japan Medical University), people tend to use their left brain when they calculate the paper and pencil way. But when people use the abacus for calculation, or if they use Anzan (mental calculation), they are using the right-brain!
